PiercingMetal’s “Best Of” 2011: The Concerts

Logo - The Best Of

Even though I generally hammer out the concerts I liked the most in my year end overview, I figured that it was high time to start using the blog to feature this kind of angle. So what I did was start with the view of sharing my top 10 concerts that I attended in 2011. Then I wrote down fifteen, then twenty and then begged my brain to stop letting the coffee push me towards thirty concerts and end with twenty three. Of course since I saw about “80” shows this past year there were a lot more that I liked but these were probably my very favorite.

1. Kamelot @ Gramercy Theatre: The band returned to the headline stage with Fabio of Rhapsody Of Fire, would he be the new voice of the band? I hope so since he ruled.

2. Trans-Siberian Orchestra @ Prudential Center: This year’s tour was apparently to be the last of the presentations of “Christmas Eve and Other Stories” for awhile and wow how could that not be a thing to see. As always this group pulls out the stops and leaves me impressed and exhausted.

3. Volbeat @ Irving Plaza: These guys are just climbing the ladder of success.

4. Stryper @ B.B. King Blues Club: There is nothing like a little bit of a yellow and black attack in this Times Square venue.

5. Thin Lizzy @ Best Buy Theater: Phil Lynott might be gone but his influence and melody remains.

Destrophy: Live Photos @ Nokia Theatre Times Square (10/22/2009)

Destrophy is a relatively new and exciting Alt-Metal band that is currently signed to Victory Records. This evening they were direct support for Type O Negative and that show was discussed in full on THIS LINK. Now please enjoy the photographs that were taken during the permitted time that the media professionals have.

Type O Negative @ Nokia Theatre Times Square (10/22/2009)

If you live in New York City and Halloween is coming, you know that there is nothing like a visit from Brooklyn’s own Type-O-Negative to get you into the proper mood. It’s been some time since we have seen these Lords Of Flatbush doing a show in the Big Apple so when they announced this visit we made sure to be around. The exciting bill would also feature both Destrophy and Seventh Void and fall right in the middle of CMJ week. That meant there was a lot of music to enjoy at almost every turn. You can learn about this gig and see all of the photos below the logo.

Given the fact that it was CMJ week in NYC the whole Big Apple was buzzing with musical activity and earlier this evening I had found myself at one of its functions where the entertainment came care of the Texas Hippie Coalition. That was a fun time and is documented in full elsewhere on the site, but the timing of their sets completion compiled with the need to get uptown and a hundred feet down into the bowels of Times Square for the performance being held deep inside the recesses of the Nokia Theatre found me missing the first band and most of the second. Oh well, that does happen from time to time and as long as I was on point and in time for Destrophy and the mighty Type-O-Negative all was good in my evening. Here is how the larger part of the show took place to get you up to speed in case you missed it.

Otep @ Blender Theater at Gramercy (8/18/2009)

Otep was back in New York City, and celebrating the release of a brand new album on their new label. The band’s gig coincided with the Victory Records debut of their music on “Smash The Control Machine” and they would deliver a rousing set for their regional fans. The show also featured local Prog-Death artisans Hung, along with Seven Year Existence and Destrophy and we made sure to cover every single moment of the show.

It’s been awhile since I have caught Otep in concert, and I think that the last time that I did was when she and her band mates did a gig down at the now closed NYC Knitting Factory. I should actually correct myself and inform the readers about how the club now resides in Brooklyn as opposed to Manhattan for those who might have been alarmed by the statement. As a group I’ve generally found Otep to be intriguing based on the way that she delivers her Metal. She blends the absolute heaviest shit on earth with poetic verse and a strong social conscience and she takes a defiant stand on domestic abuse. Clearly there is a lot to absorb when it comes to this Metal lady and tonight she would be bringing all of this out in force to the Blender Theater with special guest openers Hung from NYC, Seven Year Existence from Champaign, IL and Destrophy. Having never seen any of these openers before I made sure to get inside the venue early enough to enjoy them all. Here is how the night transpired for those who might be curious. Hung would come up first and according to reports were a last minute, albeit pleasant addition to the proceedings.
