“Deep Purple Phoenix Rising” is a definitive view at the twists and turns Deep Purple took in the post Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, and Ritchie Blackmore years. While Eagle Rock rolls out a slew of Deep Purple related CD reissues this summer the video arm of the company, Eagle Vision, offers this brand-new package examining the group’s Mark III & IV incarnations. 40 years down the road, this era is often over-looked or even dismissed in the annals of music history, but as viewers will learn it was a very interesting, creative, though often rocky ride.

“Live In California 74” by Deep Purple

Artist: Deep Purple
Title: “Live In California 74”
Label: Eagle Vision
Release Date:
Genre: Rock
Rating: 3/5

This full-length concert features a performance of the “MKIII” version of Deep Purple (Jon Lord, Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Paice joined by David Coverdale on vocals and Glen Hughes on bass/vocals). This is also the “Burn” era Purple. The show was filmed at the Ontario Motor Speedway in California (April 6th 1974) and was originally recorded for ABC Television. Despite the 30 year age of the film, there is a very good audio and video quality to it. If you analyze deeply you might find a glitch or two or places where there could be better moments but overall it is excellent quality.

“Rapture of the Deep” Special Edition by Deep Purple

Artist: Deep Purple
Title: “Rapture of the Deep” – Special Edition
Label: Eagle Records
Date: 6/27/2006
Genre: Rock
Rating: 9/10

So much positive praise has been written about Deep Purple’s “Rapture Of The Deep” that it almost was expected of the band to release a double CD special edition not long after the initial release. The reaction by the general public to the newest album by these elder Statesmen of Rock was both incredible but yet very richly deserved. It’s 2006 and Ian Gillan now leads the charge with two original members gone off to other pursuits or well-deserved relaxation. Today we find Ritchie Blackmore playing “Renaissance Fair Rock” with his partner Candice Night while Jon Lord chose to retire from touring and recording. In their place we find Steve Morse, an incredible technician on the guitar and Don Airey on keyboards who brings to the table experience gained touring with “insert artist here”. I note it like that for Don’s contributions to Rock music would very easily fill this entire page. Bass and drums are still adeptly handled by Roger Glover and Ian Paice. Gillan can still deliver when you take stock of the whole album and it’s what made me save him for last. His pipes a little softer at times, but when necessary he can belt it out just like he used to. When you listen to the recording you would hardly think that this was a band that was formed some 37 years ago. Tracks like “Money Talks” that are loaded with the signature keyboards expected in a Purple song and “Junkyard Blues” remind you that this band has not yet lost its luster but instead chosen to shine up the model just a little more for the diehard supporters they have kept throughout the years.

“Scandinavian Nights” by Deep Purple

Artist: Deep Purple
Title: “Scandinavian Nights”
Label: Spitfire Records
Release Date: 4/10/2001
Genre: Hard Rock
Rating: 4/5

Deep Purple‘s “Scandinavian Nights” recorded live in Stockholm, on November 12, 1970 is a 2 disk CD that contains some long jams, and extended versions of songs. If you are a Purple fan and are appreciative of the jams then this is the disk for you. If you think jamming is overblown and self indulgent, well then this is not the CD for you. I deffinately gets into a self indulgent frenzy in the conclusion for “Mandrake Root”. There are also great jam moments. The Disk opener “Wring That Neck” is a 34 minute tour de force jam, that highlights Jon Lords keyboard styling, and Ritchie Blackmore rips out some adventurous leads as well. Some highlights for me are the amped up and rocking, “Speed King”. The musical journey that is Child In Time and the riff rocker “Black Night” where Blackmore fires off some great leads in all the songs. The lineup for this release in Purple history is Jon Lord – Keyboards, Ian Gillan – Vocals, Ritchie Blackmore / guitars, Ian Paice / drums, Roger Glover – Bass. The recording Quality is excellent and the playing is inspired and adventurous from all members of the MKII Purple. This is a band captured on CD at the peak of their power.

Track Listing:
1. Wring That Neck
2. Speed King
3. Into The Fire
4. Paint It Black
5. Mandrake Root
6. Child In Time
7. Black Night

“Rapture Of The Deep” by Deep Purple

Artist: Deep Purple
Release: Rapture of the Deep
Label: Eagle Records
Date: November 2005
Genre: Rock
Rating: 9/10

A great album produced late in a band’s career is always a pleasant surprise, a welcome treat for longtime fans, and a deserved chance for a veteran group to refresh their repertoire. This year the stars must be in the right place because like The Rolling Stones (whose “Bigger Bang” album was their best studio output in decades) and Robert Plant (who offered up the awesome “Mighty ReArranger” disc), Deep Purple has recorded an amazing set of tunes on “Rapture of the Deep”. The eleven songs presented on their first release for Eagle Records rock as hard as any of the group’s “classic tracks” and many show great potential for live performance.
