“Live In California 74” by Deep Purple

Artist: Deep Purple
Title: “Live In California 74”
Label: Eagle Vision
Release Date:
Genre: Rock
Rating: 3/5

This full-length concert features a performance of the “MKIII” version of Deep Purple (Jon Lord, Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Paice joined by David Coverdale on vocals and Glen Hughes on bass/vocals). This is also the “Burn” era Purple. The show was filmed at the Ontario Motor Speedway in California (April 6th 1974) and was originally recorded for ABC Television. Despite the 30 year age of the film, there is a very good audio and video quality to it. If you analyze deeply you might find a glitch or two or places where there could be better moments but overall it is excellent quality.

“The Definitive Collection” by Whitesnake

Artist: Whitesnake
Title: “The Definitive Collection”
Label: Universal Music
Release Date: 2/7/2006
Genre: Hard Rock
Rating: 8/10

“In the still of the night I hear the wolf howl honey”!!!!! I remember the day I first flipped on MTV and heard David Coverdale belt out that line. It would become one of the most powerful Hard Rock tracks to hit the airwaves in a long time and with its full musicality showed the world that Rock was far from dead. The song was featured on the bands self-titled album, which was a powerhouse of Hard Rock mixed with some killer power ballads. Now with “The Definitive Collection” Whitesnake fans around the world get the chance to be bitten again by some of their very best material. Coverdale himself had a hand in the production of this piece to make sure that nothing you expected would be left out. It includes an ample amount of tracks from “Whitesnake” tracks (the self-titled has its three biggest tracks showcased), but there is also the best stuff from “Slide It In”. If you have not yet snared this album this should be a great means of introducing you to what it contains. Other albums represented are “Slip Of The Tongue” as well as tracks from “Lovehunter” which was never available in the US. A fine representation of the entire catalog with 18 songs on this single CD collection. Essentially there is something for everyone here. The CD also includes a track from the Coverdale Page album which is a definite tip of the hat to Led Zeppelin and should have led to a reunion of some sort with Coverdale at the helm (yes, it was that close). Hard core fans might gripe about some songs being omitted but there are 18 songs of course and this covers quite a few albums from a large hit making group. It is never easy to do this on a single CD collection. The CD also comes with a few great photos of the most popular lineup as well as an essay and liner notes on the songs.

“Whitesnake Live: In The Still Of The Night” (Deluxe) by Whitesnake

Artist: Whitesnake
Title: “Live… In The Still Of The Night”
Label: Universal Music
Release Date: 2/7/2006
Style: Hard Rock/Heavy Metal
Rating: 8.5/10

Whitesnake!!!! If there is one band that epitomizes the glory of 80’s Hard Rock and Metal, it’s them. This concert film from 2005 is the perfect reminder of those glory days. As you watch this DVD you will re-live a particular time in your life if you were lucky enough to remember them from experience. If you only know the band from CD and video collections, then this DVD is a treat for the senses. I remember Whitesnake from tours in the Eighties when they played with Motley Crue as support; and while I am sure I saw a few more appearances, I just can’t recall at this time. Needless to say, there was always something very “live” about Whitesnake music. Being a fan of the record was nice, but you were cheating yourself if you did not catch a concert. The memory I have of them opening for Crue is still very vivid, and the lineup was the one from the famous MTV videos. Catching them again a few years ago with a different lineup for the most part proved that this was still a Metal force to be reckoned with. Now, in 2006 with yet an almost entirely different group of players, Whitesnake shows that they still deliver and are not to be dismissed as “old school”. As the DVD begins, I have to say that David Coverdale doesn’t seem to have aged that much despite the time that has gone by. Remember, Dave was in Deep Purple in the early seventies and usually a 30 plus year career in Rock and Roll has one showing the signs of wear. No such luck in the case for Mr. Coverdale, who looks youthful and still belts out the notes, to the delight of his fans. Purple fans will enjoy the rousing opener of “Burn”, which brings a little bit of “Stormbringer” to the mix. David still has the power and the smooth-as-silk voice fans will remember well.
