Artist: Melvins
Title: “Houdini Live 2005: A Live History Of Gluttony And Lust”
Label: Ipecac Recordings
Release Date: 5/16/2006
Genre: Punk/Hard Rock
Rating: 7/10
Punk legends the Melvins have been a busy group and over the past year with touring in Europe have unleashed on the world a live recording of their classic album “Houdini”. The recording itself was not done in some conventional club but instead an isolated warehouse where the band setup shop and invited a crowd to be part of the event. I admit never really following the band but have to say that the recording truly delivers a different level of heaviness not often associated with Punk acts. There is a lot more of the Stoner Doom feel to some of the tunes which allow them a lot of room for performances with harder edged acts. There is not any crowd noise to speak of and the very clean yet dirty production level will definitely be of appeal to bands like Brand New Sin and perhaps Crowbar. Vocals are gritty across the whole piece and King Buzzo even has some Danzig moments to him. He is joined by Dale Crover (drums) and Trevor Dunn (bass). Both members of the rhythm section sing backup which brings those sections out all the more. I enjoyed the drumming very much and the bass was truly solid (as Dunn previously worked with the band Fantomas of which Slayers Dave Lombardo was a member).
