It’s been a really hectic busy time in the days post NY Comic Con and much like the previous years, the immediate days and weeks that follow find us rallying the charge behind the superhero themed television shows. By my count, the DC Comics universe has six unique shows, and most of these are in a connected universe. Now we are up to the Season 3 Premiere of “Supergirl” which airs this evening. I’ve snagged the dramatic poster and offered up some reminder premise and casting down below before my editorial viewpoints.
Season 3 Recap: In the third season, Kara struggles with the loss of Mon-El after he is forced to leave Earth. When Mon-El returns, he reveals that he has time-traveled to the 31st century and founded the Legion, alongside marrying Imra Ardeen. J’onn discovers his father M’yrnn J’onzz is alive and Alex deals with her heartbreak after breaking up with Maggie. Kara and Alex’s new friend, Samantha Arias, is unknowingly another Kryptonian survivor, and begins a transformation from a loving single mother into the world-killing weapon known as Reign, who serves a coven headed by her biological mother Selena. “Look up in the sky, and on a different network, its a bird, its a plane its Supergirl!!!!” Yes my friends, CBS might have let go of the “Supergirl” live action series but now its a part of The CW and I think in a much better place since its in the company of “The Flash”, “Arrow” and “Legends Of Tomorrow”. Check out the shows premise recap and some cast and then I’ll return with some thoughts.
The Premise/Recap:
Kara Zor-El was sent to Earth from the doomed planet Krypton as a 12-year-old by her parents Zor-El (Robert Gant) and Alura (Laura Benanti). Alura gave her instructions to protect her infant cousin Kal-El, and informed her that she, like her cousin, would have extraordinary powers under Earth’s yellow sun. En route to Earth, Kara’s spacecraft was diverted by a shock wave from Krypton’s explosion and forced into the Phantom Zone, where it stayed for 24 years. During this period, time stopped for Kara so, when the spacecraft eventually escaped the Phantom Zone, she still appeared to be a 13-year-old girl. By the time the spacecraft crash landed on Earth, Kal-El had grown up and become Superman. After helping her out of the craft, Superman took Kara to be adopted by his friends, the Danvers family. The main series begins eleven years later when the now 24-year-old Kara is learning to embrace her powers after previously hiding them.
Kara hid her powers for more than a decade, believing that Earth didn’t need another hero. However, she has to reveal her powers to thwart an unexpected disaster, setting her on her own journey of heroism as National City’s protector. Kara discovers that hundreds of the criminals her mother prosecuted as a judge on Krypton are hiding on Earth, including her mother’s twin sister Astra (also played by Benanti) and Astra’s husband Non (Chris Vance), who seek to rule the world. After briefly becoming suspicious of the true agenda of her boss, Hank Henshaw, she and her adoptive sister, Alex Danvers, secretly discover that Henshaw is actually a benevolent alien refugee, J’onn J’onzz, who has resided on Earth for over fifty years after escaping a holocaust on his homeworld of Mars. J’onn infiltrated the DEO to reform the organization as well as to watch over both Alex and Kara in addition to guiding the latter in the use of her powers due to his experience with his own abilities. Kara is also being targeted by Earth’s criminals as the result of her being related to Superman, and later on encounters an emerging community of metahumans and individuals from parallel universes. In the process, Kara accumulates her own rogues gallery who seeks to defeat and destroy her. She is aided by a few close friends and family who guard her secrets—most notably her cousin’s longtime friend, James Olsen —which also serves as a major plot in high tech mogul Maxwell Lord’s scheme to expose Kara’s identity. “Look up in the sky, it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s………….Supergirl!!!! Yes my comic themed television lovers, “Supergirl” is getting her own series and it will air on the CBS Network later on in the year. You know, CBS would have made the third network to be airing a DC Comics property if NBC hadn’t cancelled the what I thought was excellent “Constantine” series only a few short weeks ago. Man I am still bummed about that one since it seemed to be handling the character properly but oh well, I am not some network bigshot and am instead only your humble Pop Culture servant when it comes down to it. That said, CBS has given us a rather lengthy trailer or more like an exclusive look to the new “Supergirl” show and I have embedded that video for your consumption below.
