Pledge To The Rock w “We’re An American Band” (Official Video) by Dead Daisies

It’s Independence Day here in the USA and I wasn’t really planning on doing much in the way of website posting since this is a good day to reflect on our nation and the freedoms that we have. It’s also a great day to spend with the loved ones be they closer or distant family and friends. However when a valued press resource shared the existence of a new live video from the Dead Daisies that fell right in line with the day I knew that bringing it to your attention was paramount. I’ll start with the bands statement on the clip and then follow said video with some closing thoughts.

“We first did “American Band” by Grand Funk Railroad for our troops in South Korea. We wanted to bring a little bit of something “American” to our men and women in uniform, and give them a taste of home. So, what better way than a classic American tune by a legendary American band. The song went over so well we decided to keep playing it and subsequently recorded it for our “Live and Louder” album. Enjoy the Daisies version, the video, and your FREEDOM the troops are fighting for on this celebration of our independence as a young, sovereign nation!!!”

Michael Schenker Group @ Irving Plaza (7/31/2010)

Logo - MSG

Artist: Michael Schenker Group
Venue: Irving Plaza (New York, NY)
Opener: Lynch Mob, Sister Sin
Date: 7/31/2010
Label: Independent Artist

July had been a very excellent month for concerts so far but today the buzz across the Metal Republic was all intensely focused on the wedding of Chelsea Clinton………oh wait, I’m mistaken since none of us gave a rats ass about that stuff and instead we were all preparing ourselves for the return of the one and only Michael Schenker Group. MSG had performed over at The Gramercy Theatre last year and this killer show found a revitalized Michael Schenker which was a great treat as the musician had been dealing with “issues” for a couple of years prior to it. Now back on top of his game he continues to tour with singer Gary Barden at the microphone. This tour would continue to showcase the talents of guitarist/keyboardist Wayne Findlay as well and bring along the surprise new bass work of Elliot Dean and legendary drummer Carmine Appice. The tour also gave us two opening bands with Sister Sin and Lynch Mob. Here is how the hot night in NYC went down for those who were foolish enough to pass it by.

“Live In Super Overdrive” [Blu-ray] by Billy Idol

Artist: Billy Idol
Title: “Live In Super Overdrive” [Blu-ray]
Label: Eagle Vision
Release Date: 11/17/2009
Genre: Rock
Rating: 3.75/5

Released in tandem with the standard edition DVD comes the higher definition version on Blu-ray. Fans of the rocker should be aware that there are no real differences in the content being offered up but if they have the means to enjoy the video and aural sonics of the Blu-ray medium, then they should investigate this one as opposed to the standard. My views about the release remain the same so I am presenting them to you below.

Originally presented as a segment on PBS’s “Soundstage” program, this concert by Billy Idol finds the legendary performer delivering a rocking set that features a few more songs than were presented during the programs initial broadcast. That fact alone makes it something that the singers longtime fans will definitely want to get their hands on. Idol fans should be advised that this is not a vintage performance but instead one that was recorded earlier in 2009, but that doesn’t matter because if you have seen Billy Idol’s shows of late then you will know that he is better than ever at what he does. The show comes to us from the oft windy city of Chicago at its Congress Theater during the heat of the summer, yet while a hotter than hell show there is something incredibly cool about it and this comes from the singer himself as he remains collected in the premise of delivering his iconic catalog with a few new treats for his fans.

Foreigner @ Nokia Theatre Times Square (10/20/2009)

Opener: n/a

It’s pretty funny but when I think back upon all of the shows that I have attended over the course of my life it seems that not once did I ever catch the band Foreigner when they were first reaching their zenith. I was primarily surprised about this based on my loving so many of the bands tunes and how could this not be the case when popular radio during the late seventies, eighties and even some of the nineties always found their classics in regular rotation. Back in the day it was not uncommon to find the deejays playing the radio listening public a “block” of Foreigner greats or a particular album side and believe me, no one was complaining about it. The band while formed in 1976 has changed quite a few members and only finds founding guitarist/songwriter Mick Jones in place as he continues to lead the charge of the bands music with fresh talent. In 2009 Foreigner consists of Jones of course and now Kelly Hansen (vocals), Jeff Pilson (bass), Thom Gimbel (guitar), Brian Tichy (drums) and Michael Bluestein (keyboards). Many of the followers of the eighties Hard Rock and Metal remember Pilson from Dokken and Hansen from Hurricane. These stalwarts of Hair Metal would be joined by drummer Brian Tichy (who I remember from working with Billy Idol and Derek Sherinian most recently) and Thom Gimbel and Michael Bluestein who handle second guitar and keyboards respectively. Clearly the classic material of Foreigner would be in excellent hands with these musicians.
