Presenting Living Social’s Backyard Festival 2013 w/Aerosmith & Joan Jett!

Now tell me that this doesn’t sound really damn cool as an event……

Poster - Backyard Festival - 2013

Yep. Tossing their hat into the mix of regional festival events comes those fine folks at LivingSocial who will be offering up their Backyard Festival for 2013 which will bring a headlining Aerosmith to the stage along with Joan Jett and The Blackhearts and a band that is new to my musical mind the Yeahsayers. The event will take place on July 13th at Randall’s Island (this is the same place that will host the Governor’s Ball in early June in case you didn’t know). The event will take place on July 13th and also feature craft beers, wine and a BBQ for the ticket price along with the great music. This is something that really appeals to me on all counts since its rather different from the usual stuff where you just buy a ticket for the show. Add to this the kick ass music of Aerosmith and Joan Jett and this sounds like a winning combination.

I’ll be trying to get the proper credentials to not only attend the event but also come back with some photos for you to enjoy after its all said and done. If I secure any of that you will be the first to know and if we do not, well, at least Stryper is playing B.B. King Blues Club that same night.

PiercingMetal’s “Best Of” 2012: The Concerts

Looking back on 2012 as a concert going year I had to say that there were a lot of cool highlights for me. Sure I was compiling my “Year End Best Of” to cover all the different things that I’ve examined over the year but with the blog growing faster and faster and more contests happening on it for the crushing shows that hit our town, I decided to keep showcasing a number of the concerts that I saw during the course of the year. Bear in mind that these are my very favorite ones out of the whole bunch. I really had a great time seeing a number of shows but these stood out. Here we go.

1. KISS @ Live On Letterman: I don’t think that I need to go into how cool it is to see a band like KISS in the Ed Sullivan Theatre. The place holds 500 or so people and KISS sells out places that hold thousands more. See why I felt this was special. So yeah.

2. Nightwish and Kamelot @ Beacon Theatre: Nightwish and Kamelot both hold very special places to me as a music scribe and having them paired up for a tour was extraordinary.

3. Trans-Siberian Orchestra @ Prudential Center: This show was the debut of the new “Lost Christmas Eve” themed tour.

4. Roger Waters @ Yankee Stadium: My second time at Yankee Stadium for a massive concert and with Roger playing “The Wall” from front to back I stood awestruck.

5. KISS & Motley Crue @ PNC Bank Arts Center: This was a kickass pairing and the guys in The Treatment were pretty damned good as well.

6. Lamb Of God @ Roseland Ballroom: Metal laid waste to NYC this night.

7. Paganfest @ Gramercy Theatre: Turisas headlined this one and brought along Alestorm, Arkona and Huntress.

8. Sabaton @ Gramercy Theatre: This band is climbing the pole of popularity. Local support

9. Rhapsody Of Fire @ Gramercy Theatre: There was so much drama with the RoF division leading up to this show but you would never notice with the levels of kick ass Power Metal that was happening on the stage.

10. Marillion @ Irving Plaza: Leaders of the Neo-Progressive Rock movement. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen them and they even did “Kayleigh”.

Joe Perry Project @ Fillmore at Irving Plaza (11/10/2009)

The Joe Perry Project was back in NYC and hot on the heels of releasing their first new album in many years – “Have Guitar Will Travel”. The interesting thing about tonight’s fun was that the gig arrived on the same day that the news broke stories across all mediums about long time singer Steven Tyler having quit the ranks of Aerosmith. That being said everyone was wondering what exactly the show would hold for us. Would Joe excise the Aerosmith numbers from his set and not mention this at all, or would it be focused on and discussed at breaks in some detail. I was fortunate enough to be at this show and to say that it was loaded with surprises would be an understatement. Check out the story and whatever photos I was able to get from where I stood as a part of the general populace this evening by scrolling down.

Ladies and Gentlemen presenting the return of the Joe Perry Project, the band that features none other than veteran Rock guitarist Joe Perry of Aerosmith. This gig in and of itself would be cooler than cool but I had to say that the most interesting thing about it was that it came on the tail end of the news that long time singer Steven Tyler had quit the ranks of Aerosmith after fronting the band for almost forty years. Reported over a number of media outlets across the radio, internet and whatever else brings people the words of the day, this was news that no one really expected to hear and those who had seen the band while on tour over the summer with ZZ Top said they witnessed a band that was still on top of their game and showing many more years of rocking to come. It would be interesting to see what and if Joe mentioned about this tonight in front of his diehard fans in the Fillmore NY venue in The Big Apple. Given that it is not secret news I think everyone in the room was expecting some kind of statement from him about the situation and how Aerosmith intends to rectify it. Perry had a band called The Lost Souls opening up for them and they were a rocking three piece Funk Rock/Blues band for lack of a better term and I arrived a little later than planned and didn’t see their full set. I did enjoy what I saw however and would catch them again if at all possible. There was a lot of groove to their sound and the three musicians all delivered commendably. A quick set change was up next and Joe Perry was on the stage ready to Rock.

Joe Perry & Tab The Band @ The Annex (10/28/2007)

It was really special to be invited to take part in the celebrations surrounding “Guitar Hero III: Legends Of Rock” because the hoopla from the game found me at a party where the one and only Joe Perry from Aerosmith was going to be jamming a couple of songs with his sons band. It turned out to be a lot more than this when it came down to it, so the curious are encouraged to keep scrolling past the logo below.

Venue: The Annex (New York, NY)

In celebration of Activision’s launch of “Guitar Hero III: Legends Of Rock” – Aerosmith’s lead guitarist extraordinaire would be in New York City to help promote the game and sign some autographs for fans who attended the GameStop gala celebration. During the affair Perry would also serve as a judge during a fan “Guitar Hero” competition and even speak to aspiring guitar heroes in the making. Later that evening he would take part in a very special industry only showcase of music with Tab The Band at The Annex. This club is a new hot spot for Rock & Roll down on the Lower East Side and it offers a decent sized main floor and bar with a stage where bands can jam out and let the audience get up nice and close. This intimate setting made knowing about Perry’s jamming on a couple of numbers with this band a lot more exciting. The cool night air in NYC was far from present inside the club tonight and if anything it got many degrees hotter as the band went on. For those who are unaware, Tab The Band is comprised of two of Joe Perry’s own sons. We have Tony Perry on guitars, and Adrian Perry on vocals and bass while Ben Tileston is the groups friend and drummer. They are a hard rocking outfit who delivers an old school sound to a world that sorely needs this type of vibe once again. As the band was getting ready to perform I noticed that everywhere around the stage were Joe’s guitars and this meant very clearly that he would be playing more than only a couple of songs. I’ve never been happier to be right in recent memory than tonight.
