Artist: Acey Slade
Venue: Arlene’s Grocery (New York, NY)
Opener: unknown
Date: 12/18/2008
Label: Independent Artist

It’s been awhile since we have heard from Acey Slade, and the last time that I caught him in action he was serving up some guitar and backing vocals for Wednesday 13’s band when the Ghoulish one needed additional players on point due to a shoulder injury he had suffered. Slade had recently disbanded his Trashlight Vision group some months earlier, so it was great to see him back in action so quickly after the bands breakup. He seemed to go quiet and back underground for a little while but in reality he was not only composing new material for all of us to enjoy but he was also finding the time for a Halloween marriage to his stunning girlfriend Anne (Headbangers Ball hostess in Europe). They took their vows during the famous Greenwich Village Halloween parade and as result, several hundred thousand rock fans in NYC got to see this aired on the NY1 channel. Talk about a video memory.

“Sex, Murder, Art, Baby” by Acey Slade

Artist: Acey Slade
Title: “Sex, Murder, Art, Baby”
Label: Independant
Release Date: 12/
Genre: Punk Rock/Industrial Alt-Punk
Rating: 3/5

You might have heard the name Acey Slade before but in the event you have not, let me update you by saying he was once a member of Dope, of The Murderdolls and Trashlight Vision and for several months in 2007 toured as a guitarist with Wednesday 13’s band. The singer/guitarist has been hard at work of late on his newest solo material and the EP “Sex, Murder, Art, Baby” is a sampling of that which is to come. The release begins with the cryptically Gothic meets Industrial vibe of “Reptile House” and the slow groove being laid down is quite good and should find the listener’s body moving to the melodies. Right off the bat I realized how much different this stuff was from his TLV endeavors or anything he worked on with the Dope guys. Proving once again that the only constant is change comes the second track of “Nothings Gonna Change” and this is a pretty danceable tune which offered up a bit of a surprise for me since I was expecting to find much more along his Punk lines. I do like the tune but hope the full album finds more rockers as opposed to dancing kind of stuff. It’s too far left from what his core fanbase might expect of him and we sure don’t want them upset. There are two remixes of “Reptile House” and the most notable of the pair is by Hanzyl und Gretyls Kaiser Von Loopy. This is a massive burst of dark energy and brings you into the musical war zone with its alarms and crushing riffs. I liked this better than the Skinny re-mix but appreciate that Slade was offering his fans the chance to hear different plays on his new stuff with the help of his notable friends in Deathstars and Rob Zombie. The EP also features a very dark tune called “Love Sick Souls” and this had an almost Manson vibe to it. The track is exclusive to the EP so if you want it, you need to get this release.

Wednesday 13 @ Blender Theater at Gramercy (3/4/2008)

Wednesday 13 was in town once again and this time around he had Acey Slade on guitar so we couldn’t miss the chance to enjoy some morbid Rock and Roll. It’s always a good time when this group comes to slay us so should you want to learn more just scroll past the logo below.

Opener: Creature Feature, AKA’s

I’m not sure exactly how it happens, but it always seems to be a dreary and gloomy night when Wedesday 13 and his morbid band of musicians come to town. Such was the case again for the singer/guitarists return to the New York City area for an appearance at the Blender Theater. The night held a slight chill as mist swirled about where the cool met the damp and together added a slight sense of foreboding to the antics that would ensue inside the venue. I’ve caught this groovy ghoul a number of times over the last year and seem to have enjoyed him more and more as each time goes by. The last time he dropped by was in October where he did a show at the Europa Club in Brooklyn. The show that night was great but the numbers in the audience could have been better and I had to say that I felt the stage was far too small for such an energetic player. Luckily for us the stage at Blender would be much better for the type of show that Wednesday 13 and his band gives to everyone. Starting off the night as openers would be Creature Feature and the AKA’s. I would miss the CF guys tonight which was a shame since I liked them the first time I caught them at the Europa show and the AKA’s were more of a Rock/Punk act as opposed to something that works along the lines of W13’s Horror material. They sounded good and the crowd was rather responsive to them in a positive sense which is all that matters..

“Alibis And Ammunition” by Trashlight Vision

Artist: Trashlight Vision
Title: “Alibis And Ammunition”
Label: Rock Ridge Music
Release Date: 7/10/2007
Genre: Sleaze Punk Rock
Rating: 4/5

Trashlight Vision is just what the doctor ordered if your prescription called for some good old fashioned Punk & Roll. Loaded with sleaze and trashy from top to bottom the bands music rolls right off the city streets and saunters onto the stages of the dingiest, darkest clubs in town and from the sound of it I don’t think any of the members mind this at all. The band features Acey Slade on guitar and vocals and he’s most popularly known as a former member of The Murderdolls (the Horror Metal band fronted by the ghoulish singer Wednesday 13). “Alibis And Ammunition” is their debut CD and while it was originally released in the UK back in 2006, it wasn’t until Rock Ridge Music took them on in 2007 that the larger national fan base in the US was able to snare themselves a copy. It opens with “Dead Waves On The Air”, and energetic romp and stomp that’s bound to set you slamming and head banging. “Allergic To You” and “I Cant Wait To Do Nothing At All” keep the momentum going by offering up that pure Punk feel that’s sometimes reminiscent of old Social Distortion. “Screw Worm Baby” bops and weaves and definitely made me view this as a great live tune that gets the entire audience involved with the chorus and fists in the air. When the band gets to “Nola” I felt that they were offering up the most commercially viable tune on the release and this is a number that should have found a safe home on both terrestrial and satellite radio as opposed to the crap that is considered Punk in the mainstream media world nowadays.

Wednesday 13 @ Club Europa (10/11/2007)

I’ve enjoyed Wednesday 13’s music since I first heard the album “Fang Bang” and after catching him as an opener for Alice Cooper I was excited to find him doing a gig in Brooklyn. That night I took a trek down to the old neighborhood of Greenpoint to see what was brewing at Europa and would find W13 and his crew performing with Anti-Product as openers. To read and see more just scroll past the logo below.

It was a dark and stormy night when Wednesday 13 brought his “Ghouls On Parade” tour into New York City for a visit, and if you knew what was bad for you there would be no avoiding this devilishly good time. The scene of the crime would be Greenpoint Brooklyn’s Club Europa which as I approached I had realized was formerly the location of a Chinese restaurant that I used to go to with family in my younger years. As a club I admit that it is quite cool looking on the inside and has a decent bar downstairs to hang out in before you hit the venue itself which is on the second floor. The upstairs area offers a small but comfortable stage, several lounge areas and a decent dance floor where the crowd can convene to enjoy the bands. There is also a larger bar off to one side and there’s plenty of room to move around over there as well should you decide on that part of the club. It certainly had a Gothic Shock Rock feel tonight and this made it all the better based on the participants in the evenings festivities. “Ghouls On Parade” would be a tour that featured not only Wednesday 13 and his fellow zombie rockers but also finds them supported by the bands Anti-Product and Creature Feature. Trashlight Vision was supposed to be on this as well but sadly would disband just before the tour was to set to begin. I made sure to get there early enough tonight since I had heard so much about the openers as well that I knew I needed to determine what was up for myself. Here is what the story is.
