It could be said that only the most insane of Metal heads would brave the elements that hit the Big Apple this past weekend and left the region blanketed in almost a foot of snow along with a bitter cold Nordic wind from Sunday night until Monday and yet out came a little over one hundred of the legions to support the band 1349 who were doing a short tour of the states before heading home to finalize the recording of their latest Metal release. They would bring along for the nights festivities Bayonne, NJ’s Death Metallers Annunaki and here is how the gig played out for those who opted to stay warm in the confines of wherever they were. Artist: Carcass Venue: Nokia Theater (New York, NY) Opener: Suffocation, The Aborted, Necrophagist, 1349, Rotten Sound Date: 9/6/2008 Label: Nuclear Blast Records
The summer still had a few weeks left to go before the fall would offer our region some much needed relief from the stifling heat that we had this particular summer season and based on this it made sense that one of the year’s hottest tickets would take place before it closed out. The killer show that I am talking about is none other than the reunion jaunt of the mighty Carcass – the absolute legends of the Grindcore scene and pretty much the reason that the whole genre came about in the first place. The hotter than Hell bill for this event was labeled as the “Exhumed To Consume” tour and not only would it feature Suffocation, 1349, The Aborted, Necrophagist and Rotten Sound as the openers but it would also come to the Big Apple hand in hand with Hurricane Hanna. Readers should know that I don’t mean some sort of female wrestler but instead a super powerful storm system that had been making the news for days before it hit us. Luckily, those who actually had tickets for the long sold out event would be safe inside the depths of the Nokia Theater in Times Square. The doors opened for the venue at around 6:30 to my knowledge but the first band would not go on for another hour. That’s a lot of time to wait around the Nokia, and with six bands in total on the bill this was looking to be a very long night of Metal. Here is how the evening went down for those who missed it. Artist: Celtic Frost Venue: B.B. King Blues Club (New York, NY) Opener: Sahg, 1349 Date: 9/15/2006 Label: Century Media Records
It has become evident to me that Metal rules when it comes down to the venue B.B. King Blues Club. If you merely judge what has happened there over the past year you will find that a literal who’s who in the vast and varied Metal genres have appeared, hosted reunion or even final appearances on that stage. Tonight we could count on more of the same as for the first time in almost 17 years in New York City would be legendary Black Metal pioneers Celtic Frost. The group would be supported on this first leg of the tour by both Sahg and 1349 and according to research this would be the first time those two bands visited as well. I arrived shortly after Sahg had begun but caught enough of their set to explain what they were all about. Sahg is an almost Black Sabbath meets Hard Rock Doom and Stoner music that is quickly enjoyable and on the catchy side. Their singer has many Ozzy Osbourne inflections in his voice and he really holds up live. The only bad part was that since they went on a bit early the room was not yet filled to its capacity. The group also has a member of Extreme Black Metal’s Gorgoroth on the bass. Yes, King Ov Hell is part of the band minus his truly frightening corpse paint. Good players all around and a band that will have a certain lock with the audience if they are on a show that best suits them. I did not personally think that this was the one for them. Their album “Sahg I” is available on Candlelight Records and is something that fans of the Doom/Stoner style will go for. Continue reading Celtic Frost @ B.B. King Blues Club (9/15/2006)→
