The New York Comic Con was returning to an in-person event at the Javits Center but it wouldn’t be “the same” in terms of the way that it was going to be held. With the virus still among us, the patrons needed to show a proof of full vaccinations which is either two doses of Pfizer or Moderna or one dose of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. I’ll begin my photographic journey with the space in the empty lot that was set up to confirm vaccination and issue a wrist band. I was okay with this need as I am taking a Covid Compliance Officer class next week to do work in this field.
One of the conditions for this year’s event was that you needed to wear a facemask that covered your mouth and nose. I’ve been wearing this kind of thing for months now since other events had started to happen and with work requirements. Our first cosplayer photo shows a unique take on Jack Skellington with her facemask.

Those who’ve attended the NYCC over the years know this is where the patrons who are picking up their badges go and it was still on the early side so the throng of attendees I saw arriving at the vaccination check point had not made their way into the place yet.
Those familiar with our narratives from the New York Comic Con adventures know that a lot of photos are in store for them. My usual plans are to hit The Block first and then explore some of the main expo floor and so on. With a different vibe this year I am unsure how to begin so will just serve up what I get and occasional dialgoue along the way. Right now my plan is to go all four days so let’s get on moving.
Badge secured it’s time to really explore and I am always excited when I take this kind of photo. I end up using this one across all the socials when I do my check ins or tweets. I wonder also if many of the readership are here with me.
Taking a glance down this side of the Crystal Palace of Javits Center was a little depressing because this is usually the location of the DC Entertainment pavilion. There were always display cases of upcoming toy releases, lifesize mannequins wearing costumes from the DCEU films and lots of staff handing out free comic books and buttons. I’ve secured quite a bit of loot from this area and have shared it along so knowing that DC Entertainment would NOT be here this year was a bummer.
Now its without question that I love the cosplayers and since my first go round at New York Comic Con back in 2010 I have been snapping photos of whoever is interested in being included in my coverage. Remember, its not polite to just snap a photo and be posting it somewhere and its best to ask. So that being said, I usually see a lot of Deadpool and Harley Quinn cosplays of all different kinds and with the recent Disney+ series “Loki” there would be a lot of them here as well.
This is our dear friend Barbie Chula who is a cosplayer like no other. The horrific creations that she brings to life are just out of this world. We met at the Winter Con a few years ago and always have a great catch up. Truth be told I don’t know this cosplay of hers but she looks deadly.
Here are some media brothers of mine. I absolutely cherish the moments with these dudes and was happy to have them all in one place for this photograph.
While I am NOT the biggest study of the Anime side of the fence I know the key properties and this “Dragonball Z” setup was impressive so I snapped a few images.
So you’ll have to correct me if I am wrong about this but I don’t recall seeing this vendor the last time we had a NYCC. This was more bid based auction stuff and yeah there were some truly cool items here to possibly own if you bid the right price. That realm is not for me as I would spend a fortune and then hate myself in the morning while wearing or carrying whatever I won.
These next three images feature some massive statues that were a part of the Tamashii Nations displays. I’ve decided to give those visuals a post of their own to mix this coverage up a little bit. Stay tuned for that post after the Day One images run out.
This massive open space is right at the entrance of the main expo floor and as you can see is focused on Gaming. They had all sorts of stuff going on and it was free to participate and battle it out with each other. I didn’t try my hand as there was still a lot to do but I loved that they added this feature into the daily programming.
I’ve seen the booth from Equilibrium a few times before and I am curious about their bags or should I say “Urban Survival Gear”. Now I love a good bag and have been using stuff from Thinktank Photo for years for my rig and some other necessities but I wouldn’t mind examining one of these for my adventures. Hey Equillibrium, let’s talk…
That’s going to bring me to the end of the first part of our Day One adventuring at New York Comic Con. I am not going to lie to you and say that it didn’t feel a little strange during this COVID time but I was glad to be here and seeing some familiar sights. I will continue along with Day One until we’re finished with photos and then present that Tamashii Nations post. Stay tuned. Don’t forget to follow PiercingMetal on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube so you don’t miss a second of the fun. See you next time.
