The Big Apple Comic Con is the longest running pop culture convention in New York City. While smaller in scale than the mega-event known as New York Comic Con, the Big Apple event truly focuses on the comic book medium and many creative legends. It’s been held at the New Yorker Hotel for several years now and I’ve attended as media on a semi-regular basis. Sometimes that workaday life gets in the way of the fun but here I was and ready to explore the findings.
The show seems to have settled on the Fall season and has become a one-day only event. I preferred a two-day event but hey I’m not in the marketing and finance team about the plans so I will take what they dish out. As expected, this walkaround will be mostly photos with some editorial commentary peppered in and my hope is to do a number of artist interviews as well. I always love doing them and they help broaden the Pop Culture stuff that we have been doing on the site for quite some time now.
One of the appeals of the BACC (which will be how I’ll be typing that from now on) is the vast and varied vendors that show up. This one had some classic Rock memorabilia.
Here’s a classic cover of “Rune” which was a great vampire comic book from the Ultraverse line of comics. This was by Bernie Wrightson.
Talk about something you don’t always see up for sale, the classic, oversized KISS Comics. These were Marvel Comics Super Special editions and I loved the first one the best. It was an exciting story about the new Hard Rock heroes against Doctor Doom. Did you know that KISS first appeared in comics in an issue of “Howard The Duck”.
The folks at Tex’s had a promotion but I didn’t sign up since I’m on enough food apps already.
As you well know from my New York Comic Con coverage, I just love to capture the cosplayers that I run into at cons and this Black Widow and Daredevil couple were my first ones at the event. I loved reading the “Daredevil and Black Widow” issues when they were out.
It’s Fabrice Sapolsky…
Here’s artist Paris Cullens, co-creator of Blue Devil.
The 501st Legion was present and on patrol on behalf of The Empire.
This is Jesse Simon, grandson of the great Joe Simon who created Captain America with Jack Kirby.
Alas I reported artist Keith Williams to the Empire. He’ll be okay.
When I go to BACC I tend to spend most of my time in the Artist Alley area but this is a look down on the Dealers Room and its here that you can find a lot of great classic comic books. Though you can’t see them all, there are a couple of dozen vendors down there and some of them even have discounted boxes of good stuff.
Artist Brian Kong is really awesome and these KISS works won me over but sadly I just don’t have the budget for such things at the moment.
Here’s artist Patrick Sinnott and Jamal Johns.
This kewl cat is artist Alexandra Bowman and I actually met her at the BroadwayCon back in the summer. She is cosplaying as Rum Tum Tugger from “Cats”.
This is Laserman…
The great Jim Salicrup…
The also awesome Billy Tucci, creator of “Shi”.
The folks from “Den Of Geek” were here and left a pile of their magazines for anyone who wanted a copy. That was nice of them.
I’ll wrap this one up now but don’t worry I will have an additional chapter to share with you tomorrow. I stayed at the show almost the entire time which allowed me to get some other stuff done.
