Hello again my friends and welcome back to another bit of convention coverage and photo presenting from the 5th Annual Anime NYC. I’ve been attending this one since it began and for those new to the event and these kinds of proceedings, its a creation of the fine folks at Leftfield Media and is presented by Crunchyroll. Now as I’ve probably mentioned somewhere else, I am not the biggest study in the world of Anime despite my deep appreciation for all things comic books and those films that relate to the characters that I grew up with. With all that being said we are back at the Javits Center almost a month after the famed New York Comic Con and were very excited to see what was going on in this always fun time. Once I secured my press badge, I poked around and learned that there would be no proper opening ceremonies and I learned it was in the interest of continued COVID-19 protection. This surprised me since so many events had moved past this by this time but thanks to a report from our former idiot Mayor DiBlasio last year, he alarmed the city with reports that a spreader event had happened here. It did not but I digress. Before the adventuring began I’ve taken a page out of my NYCC posts and did a short clip for the three networks and share the one from our Official YouTube here.
Now its time to start wandering and hopefully also to connect with some friends that I’ve made over the last four events. The reconnects make events like this a lot more fun. My hope is to also do some artist interviews like at NYCC so wish me luck.
My first cosplayer group. They were very awesomely dressed.
I was near the table of the Dope Pope and since Gamera was recently mentioned in the geek news, I snapped a photo of his digital sculpt of the famous Kaiju.
We also saw Miss Emily Ree who we’ve known a couple of years now and always love to chat with. As you can see, the facemasks were required at this event. They tried this at NYCC but it was too difficult to enforce.
One never quite expects to run into Papa Emeritus from Ghost at an Anime convention but here he was. Spreading their sinister Gospel.
In one of the main expo floor sides they had a huge inflatable of Straw Hat or Luffy from “One Piece”. This is a show that many have told me I should start to watch but I heard there are something like 1K episodes and I don’t have time for that at all.
Bandai Namco had these two massive Gundam statues guarding their pavilion. We have seen them before but they are always a welcome sight.
There were a multitude of cool cars all wrapped in Anime and Manga characters. Pretty cool for sure. Maybe I will devote a whole chapter to these cars if time permits. If not, next time for sure.
This “Defend Animals” was the booth for the creator of Calico who was a ruthless sort to anyone who would hurt animals. I plan on talking to this creator before the convention is over.
One of the booths was the Japan Local Government Center. I’d love to visit the country some day as it looks to be quite beautiful. Maybe these folks can help arrange for me to do a “media visit” hint hint hint 🙂
This is Acky Bright, a famous Japanese artist. He was putting this incredible drawing together and had a whole booth of items dedicated to his works.
The folks from Tamashii Nations had a few sets of statues up for photo ops like this one of the “Spy X Family”. Remember my friends do NOT touch or climb on these statues since you can damage them and prevent them from being brought to other events where people can enjoy them.
These cosplayers were up to some kind of routine and that finds me ending this installment from the adventuring right here. Don’t worry, I will be back with a second chapter and keep returning until I am out of photographs.
Hopefully you have enjoyed the beginning of our Day One offerings from Anime NYC 2022. Stay tuned for the next chapter which will post tomorrow. While you wait for that please make sure that you are tuning in to our respective social media profiles since we love knowing that you are out there.
