It was only a few short hours ago that the legendary King Diamond took over NYC with a show at Brooklyn’s beautiful King’s Theatre. While we were not in attendance to be able to share much about the show with you, I did learn that a brand-new song called “Masquerade Of Madness” was performed mid-way through the show. Now that the clock has struck midnight, the rest of the world can absorb it via whatever their preferred streaming service might be. The song is available on all of them and comes care of Metal Blade Records. Let’s discuss in brief.
The song starts off with a crunching riff before King lines out the tale about a solitary girl locked away based on insanity and the loneliness and sadness she deals with on a daily basis. His voice sounds great from his low growls to the high falsetto that he is so known for and overall the musicianship on the track is solid. LaRoque never disappoints on guitar and the drumming is on point as well. There are sections where I feel they are using keyboards to orchestrate some of the chorus and make it fuller and I liked how this sounded. There is a haunting creepiness to the tune and it works within the lines of the King Diamond catalog for sure. The song will appear on his upcoming album “The Institute” and I expect most of the works to reflect elements of madness or other forms of psychosis in both patients and the doctors that treat them.
As a first taste of what is to come I feel the King has done a fine job and most of his fans should enjoy the tune. The album art is rather garish as well with the girl in the song sitting alone on a bed in an asylum wearing what appears to be an iron mask. Creepy stuff for sure but should we expect anything less from the King Diamond camp. I think not.
