As we are a few weeks away from the 2019 “Free Comic Book Day”, I wanted to take a few minutes of your time to talk up some of the issues that most interested me. Now I pretty much lean towards the superhero and science fiction titles if anything but as I glanced at the numerous free provisions that will be out there on that first Saturday in May, noticed some others that were a definite curiousity. I’ve snagged the images from the Official FCDB Website but if you want a deeper overview of what each title is about you should click over to them care of THIS LINK. My plan for this narrative is to group the issues into the “Must Have”, “Would Like To Have” and are “Somewhat Curious” about. Let’s go.
MUST HAVE: My “MUST” have list is a little longer than I anticipated for this years FCBD and of course I don’t know what my local retailer is limiting customers to. If I can snag “10” and these are all on the shelves I am good to go because with “Avengers” being a hot commodity thanks to the “Avengers: Endgame” film opening up soon this will likely disappear from the shelves. “Deadly Class” has a hot show, and “Spawn” is getting a new movie and who doesn’t love a little “Spider-Man” at the end of the day. A big list but that’s bound to happen.
WOULD LIKE TO HAVE: This list is a group that I’d like to add to the pile based on the properties that they are covering. The success of “Buffy” and “Firefly” in fandom is super high and “Riverdale” has been a breakaway hit. The rest are popular properties that I see a lot manifesting at New York Comic Con so having more reading in my arsenal of comic book knowledge.
SOMEWHAT CURIOUS: This group is just a few random items that piqued my curiosity a little bit more than they didn’t. I don’t know much about the titles here but that is the great thing about FCBD. The means to try something new is there but that is all depending on whether or not you can take a few additional copies past your “Must Have” list.
PiercingMetal Thoughts: So there you have it. I won’t add too much more to the mix since I was talking most of the way through those images. However, I will ask what you liked the most from that number of titles and which ones you hope to procure on “Free Comic Book Day”. Remember that while these issues are free to the consumer if your store is participating, they are NOT free to the retailer and they pay for them. It’s always a great idea to bring some money to purchase some action figures, collector’s cards or comic book supplies like the sleeves and backing boards. It’s good karma. So far my own plan is to just hit Galaxy Comics in Bay Ridge as early as possible. I don’t think I will find the time to head into the city after that since those folks line up at 8AM for some of the retailers. What shop will you be heading to for “Free Comic Book Day”? Chime in down below with your picks and a shout out to your local dealer. I will see you next time.
