“Look up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman!!!! Yes its Superman, strange visitor from another planet who came to Earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men. Superman; who can change the course of mighty rivers, bend steel with his bare hands, and who, disguised as Clark Kent mild-mannered reporter for a great Metropolitan newspaper fights for Truth, Justice and the American Way.”
Whew. Can you believe that I remembered that whole announcement right off of the top of my head? Well, I did and I admit I even surprised myself. I guess when I was younger I watched the re-runs of the classic television series “Adventures Of Superman” quite a bit and as result heard it more than a few times a week. Moving along, we are finally at the day of release for the long awaited “Man Of Steel” film and I can honestly say that I am very excited about it. I should admit to you first and foremost that when growing up I was not the biggest Superman fan as far as the comics went, but this changed with the “Crisis On Infinite Earths” reboot and the John Byrne run on his title. I of course loved the first two films with the late great Christopher Reeve but not so much in the positive can be said for numbers III and IV nor that “Superman Returns” dreck from a couple of years ago.
“Man Of Steel” will be a reboot of the character and while the idea slightly annoyed me when it came to “Spider-Man” and will likely do the same when the next “Batman” films come along, I think that Superman needed a reworking or at least a more modern update from those two classic films. Now, that being said I was NOT impressed at all with the original trailer that I caught. It didn’t make me sit on the edge of my seat or even have a “wow I am psyched for this” as much as I was with every single Marvel Cinematic Universe film from the last few years. That left me on the skeptical side but as more images started coming out and after talking to some of the folks at the DC Entertainment booth at Toy Fair I was finding myself more and more convinced about giving it a proper chance. The latest trailer now finds me feeling the same way that I did when I caught the full length “Marvel’s The Avengers” trailer back in 2012. The film will show the infant Kal-El escaping the doomed Krypton and growing up while becoming more and more aware of his great powers. We’ll meet the insidious General Zod and will likely be on edge as the inevitable clash builds. I’ll say no more about it from here and hope to see the film within the first few days. Not too sure about a review just yet, but who knows. Maybe after I am sure that nothing I post will be a spoiler.
