The Alt-Rock band The Unlikely Candidates have offered up their take on the 1977 holiday classic “Father Christmas” which was an original composition by the legendary British Rock band The Kinks. This was my first time hearing the band do anything and I was glad to find a holiday track from them since around this time of the year I love to offer up spirited narratives that fit best with the season. The original Kinks version surely rocks but how did The Unlikely Candidates do with it? Let’s discuss.

The track for the most part is a pretty faithful rendition of the original number by The Kinks and I didn’t mind that at all. Sure there is a bit of a Punk sensibility to it but I don’t mind that either. Certain songs you really can’t deviate too much from and through it all singer Kyle Morris seems to offer up his best Ray Davies throughout the verses. The rest of the band does quite well and consists of Cole Male (guitar), Kevin Goddard (drums), Brenton Carney (guitar) and Jared Hornbeek (bass). Since this is done with a little more up tempo than the original, it is shorter by about “20” seconds give or take. If you’re looking to build a Holiday Playlist in your Spotify or other music streaming service, you won’t be disappointed by this one. Check it out, nice work lads.
