Now that Valentine’s Day is out of the way we can focus the love on the bands which bring the heaviness to the live stage and with that in mind here is a recent announcement from The Devin Townsend Project. Take a look.
DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT will return to the road in the US this year with a two week stretch of dates; some of which will see the band playing support for Opeth. The band continues to tour on the strength of their new record, Transcendence. Speaking about their upcoming shows in North America, Devin comments:
“Continuing on our run to support Transcendence, we are coming back to America for a quick run with Opeth and Gojira as well as some additional dates to get us to and from those shows. We are many places this year and are trying to make sure we take advantage of our geographic locations as we roll. The band keeps getting stronger and we look forward to seeing you there!”
Recorded at The Armoury Studios in Vancouver, Canada with Townsend and Adam ‘Nolly’ Getgood (Periphery, Animals as Leaders), Transcendence sounds absolutely massive. From the moment ‘Truth’—a re-work from the Infinity album—monstrously blends into the soul-stirring ‘Stormbending’ to the undulating cool of mid-point jam ‘Secret Sciences’ and Ween cover ‘Transdermal Celebration’, Townsend and crew have engineered a modern-day classic. The sheer scale of tracks like ‘Failure’, ‘Higher’, and the majestic title track is at once daunting and inviting. Transcendence pulls the listener in like a movie score. It has the emotional heft of Rosenman’s Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and the mega-riff power of Black-era Metallica.

PiercingMetal Thoughts: Lots to do so I will be keeping this closing on the short side. Simply put, the DTP is a fantastic live experience and pretty much a show that will be entertaining from beginning to end. Great music and fantastic crowd banter from Devin who remains a fascinating musician and one who is worth seeing do his thing properly. I’ve not seen Thank You Scientist before but will be looking them up but I am able to say that Oni was pretty interesting. He’s not heading to NYC with this go round so you folks outside of our own musical stomping grounds will have to fill us in on the details. What are your thoughts on this new tour announcement? Will you go? Let me know in the comments section below.
