CBS All Access Reveals “Star Trek: Discovery” Official Trailer @ SDCC

Back in May I shared the first glimpse into the upcoming “Star Trek: Discovery” series which will be broadcast in full on the CBS All Access service. Now we have another trailer which premiered at the recently held Comic Con International: San Diego. I waited since there were so many trailers to share with you and this one will be on towards the end of September so it didn’t really need to be ahead of our other posts. Take a look. Then review the overall premise and the casting. I will close out with thoughts on this trailer afterwards.

The Premise: Set roughly ten years before the events of the original Star Trek, the series follows the crew of the USS Discovery as they discover new worlds and civilizations, while exploring the franchise’s signature contemporary themes. The season-long storyline revolves around “an incident and an event in Star Trek history that’s been talked about but never been explored”.

The Cast/Characters:
Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham
Terry Serpico as Anderson
Maulik Pancholy as Nambue: Chief Medical Officer of the USS Shenzhou
Sam Vartholomeos as Connor: A junior officer in Starfleet Academy
James Frain as Sarek
Doug Jones as Saru
Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou: Captain of the Shenzhou
Anthony Rapp as Stamets: A Science Officer
Chris Obi as T’Kuvma: A Klingon
Shazad Latif as Tyler: A Starfleet lieutenant
Mary Chieffo as L’Rell: Battle Deck Commander
Jason Isaacs as Lorca
Mary Wiseman as Tilly
Rainn Wilson as Harry Mudd
Kenneth Mitchell as Kol: Commanding Officer of the Klingons
Rekha Sharma as Landry: Security Officer
Damon Runyan as Ujilli
Clare McConnell as Dennas

PiercingMetal Thoughts: After watching this trailer, I found myself repeating myself mentally from the debut trailer where I noted how “I felt that this first look was surely interesting enough to find me setting the DVR for the season premiere episode but I am pretty much on the fence about signing up for another means of streaming something”. With that said I am all the more firm about my NOT subscribing to another service because I am already paying a kings ransom to have the programming that I have now. There are no less than eight superhero or comics related shows being broadcast and then there are the limited series that get shown and pique my interest. Since that debut trailer, Disney announced an upcoming streaming service and that will likely take the Marvel Television series off of Netflix going forward and this leaves me rather cold because a viewer will need to sign up for five or six different services just to keep up on the shows that they love the most. Yeah I sense this model failing almost as fast as it launches. To think that I need a CBS account for Star Trek, a Disney account for Marvel related stuff and I can only imagine that a WB network is coming for the DC Superhero stuff. Not happening. The main thing that I did enjoy though about the trailer was the new characters and it made me pine for another edition of “Star Trek Mission New York” which was a convention from last year as well. Come join me on the bridge for another look at that coverage HERE and if you missed it and think it looked awesome, start writing the ReedPOP folks and demand that they do another one. You can also let me know if you are setting up an account on CBS All Access and are interested in this new “Star Trek: Discovery” series down in the comments section below.
