Nightwish @ L’Amour (9/3/2003)

Logo - Nightwish

Artist: Nightwish
Venue: L’Amour (Brooklyn, NY)
Opener: unsigned acts
Label: Century Media Records
Date: 9/3/2003

A few short weeks ago Finland’s own Nightwish made their very first New York appearance at the famous L’Amour’s in Brooklyn. Metal heads know this place as a staple venue in the Metal World for more than two decades. To be honest with you I have only been a Nightwish fan for a little over a year and have yet to buy any of their material. Every release they have so far is an import and very expensive. Even my inner circle of music fans have hardly heard of this fine power-metal group. This fact makes me laugh since I always try to be ahead of others in this regard, but alas I owe this to someone else. So off to the show I went with a small crew of buddies expecting the standard fare.

Queensryche @ Beacon Theatre (2/3/2005)

Logo - Queensryche

Artist: Queensryche
Venue: Beacon Theatre (New York, NY)
Opener: n/a
Date: 2-3-2005
Label: Sanctuary Records

For my first concert and Road Report of the year 2005 I cannot think of any better way to kick it off than by seeing Queensryche perform in a theatre setting. For the past few years, the Ryche as fans refer to them, have made sure to make the Beacon Theater in NYC a stopping point. Considering I was only at a Queensryche performance a couple of months ago the thought had come for me to pass on this one. When the news became clear that the group would be playing the evening alone and perform the entire “Operation: Mindcrime” CD, my decision was clear. I was glad that I did, for this was a night with little disappointment and a larger number of highlights.

Michael Schenker Group @ Mulcahy’s (12/13/2003)

Logo - MSG

Artist: Michael Schenker Group
Venue: Mulcahy’s LI-NY
Opener:
Label: Massacre Records:
Date: 12-13-2003

There is probably no argument among music fans about Micheal Schenker being one the true Rock Guitar Gods of our time. His accomplishments on the guitar are legend due to his many successful recordings with The Scorpions, UFO and finally as a solo artist with The Michael Schenker Group. Recently, Michael took MSG and some of his best material back on the road for a few shows in my vicinity. Added to the luck would be my chance to see Stu Hamm playing the bass (since he is one of the greatest bassists ever). However, upon arrival I was told that this was not to be the case as Stu only records with Mike and does not tour. The members of the MSG that night were Chris Logan: Vocals, Rev Jones: Bass, Pete Holmes: drums and Wayne Findley: keyboards & guitar. I was never able to see Mike in years past so I was glad to get the chance and to bring the report to you all.

Michael Schenker Group @ The Wreck Room (9/16/2004)

Logo - MSG

Artist: Michael Schenker Group
Venue: The Wreck Room (Wallington, NJ)
Opener: Uli Jon Roth
Label: Massacre Records
Date: 09-16-2004

Michael Schenker Group has returned to the NY Area once again, and this time the appearance is all the more special. Seeing MSG is always a guaranteed good time for fans of the Guitar God for he is a leader in the field of hard rock guitar. However, this time he would be supported by the one and only Uli Jon Roth who many will remember as the guitarist in Scorpions many years ago. While Uli has been a solo performer for a long time it was not until discussing this appearance with fellow fans that we realized that while Michael does not tour here often, Uli had not been to the United States in almost 20 years.

Tonight Uli Jon Roth would perform his set with a rhythm player and a keyboardist. Many of the drums and lush orchestrations that are on his albums needed to be programmed and performed via computer for these particular live shows. One cannot travel a small club tour overseas with a full company of string instruments. His backdrop was a unique sight as behind Uli was a projected movie screen that showed wild psychedelic images or the orchestra accompaniment. Uli dresses very Rennaissance styled with a large feathered hat, and a shirt that matches this era, it actually went along well with his orchestra compositions. It’s a very Hendrix manner of dress.

Nightwish @ B.B. King Blues Club (8/22/2004)

Logo - Nightwish

Artist: Nightwish
Venue: B.B. King Blues Club (New York, NY)
Opener: Lullacry
Label: Roadrunner Records
Date: 8/22/2004

To say that the level of electricity was high for Nightwish’s return to New York City would be an understatement. The show had gone on sale several months ago when I first purchased my tickets and it sold out within the month. The timeframe was around February or so when I got my tickets for the show that was in August. Impressive to say the least, yet I guess with the band being from Finland this early sale is required to generate the proper interest to cover the costs it will incur. When Nightwish first visited, it was a one-night only appearance at Brooklyn’s famous L’Amour (now since closed). Now, they have returned on a full USA Tour with fellow Finnish rockers Lullacry.
