Meshuggah has returned, well, at least they will return with a full album entitled “The Violent Sleep Of Reason” in October and the fans of the band are now able to get their first aural exposure to the works with the debut single “Born In Dissonance”. So how is it? I must admit that it’s a little tricky to first explain something by Meshuggah to anyone who hasn’t really followed them before and I’ve usually had more success with this after hearing the full body of work.
Right off the bat the chugging syncopation of Haake’s drumming stands out in the way that it works so seamlessly with the guitar riffs of Thordendal. I think the longtime fans will be pleased. Singer Jens growls with his usual intensity and I wish that I had access to the lyrics to know more about the tunes premise. I loved Fredrik’s lead break since he is such an accomplished player and overall I feel that there are enough dynamics in this one to make any listener nod in approval in anticipation of what’s to come. As I’ve noted already “The Violent Sleep Of Reason” will arrive in early October on Nuclear Blast Records and I am certain that a tour announcement will be coming soon as well. Stay tuned for more. Nice work from Meshuggah and I am eager to hear the rest.
