“Crossroads Guitar Festival 2010” (Blu-ray) by Eric Clapton

Artist: Eric Clapton
Title: “Crossroads Guitar Festival 2010” (Blu-Ray)
Label: Rhino Entertainment
Release: 11/9/2010
Rating: 5/5

Let me preface this review by saying that there is so much to recommend on this 2-Disc Blu-Ray set from Rhino Entertainment that your time might be better spent just going out and buying it instead of reading this review. For those who need convincing I will delineate just a few of what I consider high points of the package which represents a distillation of 11 hours of music played in Chicago’s Toyota Park on June 26, 2010.

Those already familiar with the Crossroads festivals and their ensuing DVD’s expect to be treated to special performances by the “name” acts and for the most part won’t be disappointed. For me it is the unexpected moments of virtuosity that make this and earlier installments of Crossroads on DVD a treat. An immediate revelation amidst 2010‘s performers is Earl Klugh. His beautiful melodic nylon string guitar licks simultaneously evoke “Breezin’” style mellowness and Return To Forever like fusion. I will certainly be exploring his expansive catalog in more depth.

“Ghost Blues: The Story of Rory Gallagher and The Beat Club Sessions 1971-1972” by Rory Gallagher

Artist: Rory Gallagher
Title: “Ghost Blues: The Story of Rory Gallagher and The Beat Club Sessions 1971-1972”
Label: Eagle Vision
Release Date: 9/14/2010
Genre: Blues Rock
Rating: 4.5/5

Eaglerock Entertainment expands it’s already impressive offering of Rory Gallagher DVD’s with “Ghost Blues: The Story of Rory Gallagher” a two disc package comprised of a brand new documentary on the Irish guitarist and a disc of live performances originally broadcast on Germany’s Beat Club TV show.

While under appreciated in America based on his single minded aversion to the hype of record company publicity departments, Gallagher carved a unique legacy in Europe through constant touring and barn burning shows. The guy did not have to stand underneath a laser pyramid to get his point across. He grabbed his signature Fender Stratocaster and laid down the truth.

Roger Daltrey @ Nokia Theatre Times Square (11/20/2009)

You know his name as being one of the original founding members of The Who, a band that broke incredible ground in behalf of Rock & Roll music and whose sound is just as important today as it was when it first came upon the scene.  It’s pretty safe to say that they are one of the best Rock bands that ever walked the Earth and despite the passing of a couple of members they are still active and impressing audiences of the world today.  Tonight’s show would find the bands singer Roger Daltrey doing a short run of solo dates on his “Use It Or Lose It” tour and it was sure to be a night of wonderful memories.   Scroll past the logo below to see the full article on the official PiercingMetal.com website.   The words are by Peter Parrella and the images are from me Ken P.

At 65 years of age Roger Daltrey has embarked on what he’s dubbed the “Use It or Lose It” tour. The vocal chords are an instrument that must to be used or they turn to “jelly” he explained to the Nokia audience at the start of the night on November 20, 2009. Therefore he set out on a group of solo shows to keep his chops in good shape. As lead singer of The Who, Daltrey is an iconic figure, along with Zeppelin’s Robert Plant the epitome of “golden god” 1970’s classic rock star, frozen in time in some of pop media’s most memorable images. At “retirement age” the singer shows no sign of handing off the rock god mantel. He’s still open shirt buff and scrappy on stage; not afraid to admonish the audience about their smoking habits (Mr. D. has unfortunately developed a nasty allergy to the weedy stuff) and willing to challenge the oft too chatty crowd for their attention.

As discussed right here on the website, PiercingMetal’s own Ken Pierce and “Skeleton” Pete Parrella were exploring some different media worlds with their coverage of the stage script reading of a hopefully Broadway bound musical called “Us”. The experience was fully documented in a post that you can find HERE, and now please enjoy a full gallery of images that were captured care of the keen eye of Skeleton Pete.
