Deicide @ The North Six (10/20/2006)

This was a show that was not meant for everyone and definitely not for the piously faint of heart. It was the legendary blasphemers themselves Deicide who would invade Brooklyn like an assault force. My own scheduling was insane for the month and hence I would not be able to attend this one so our own Natalia or “Nell” to most would be on point to bring us the scoop.

The night of the Deicide show was going to be a night to remember whether you were standing inside the venue or outside facing the elements. No matter which you faced, you were going to be in Hell tonight for inside the club it was hot, humid and far too crowded while outside it was quite cold and windy. The North Six as a venue is a good place but it all depends on what band you are and what the crowd expectation is. If you are smaller group with a decent but not crazy following this is great but if you are one of the premier Death Metal bands who decided to make a return to the area then this is not for you. It would be the case for Deicide tonight as it was beyond crowded and while this is uncomfortable to most it did not stop the fans from having a good time at the show. Moshpits broke out in every section of the place and judging by the size of them you could tell that everyone was having a great time since it began when the openers started to play. While their names escape me, I have to say that a majority of them were good from a musical and performance point of view. Good guitar solos and many longhaired dudes.

Manowar @ B.B. King Blues Club (6/19/2005)

Artist: Manowar
Venue: B.B. King Blues Club (New York, NY)
Opener: Rhapsody & Holy Hell
Label: SPV Records
Date: 6/19/2005
Genre: Heavy Metal

The show was a late one for B.B. King’s with a start time of 9:00 for the first band. It was fun for as I waited on line I bumped into Ken Kelly (artist of some of the excellent Manowar covers). When he realized it was me he asked if I was indeed getting in but I was lucky to have my own ticket for this sold out show. Sadly the night started off bad for a couple of kids who were either too drunk or had sampled something else and were being escorted out. This was a $50 show people; let’s use the brain for a change. My Editor Ken would be missing this show due to illness, and when I thought that I was at least going to be able to use his photo pass, I was discouraged to find that none of them had been granted for the performance after all. It would have been excellent to shoot pics of this Legendary Metal band.

“Helping The World To See” by Vehemence

Artist: Vehemence
Title: “Helping the World To See”
Label: Metal Blade Records
Release Date: 4/6/2004
Genre: Melodic Death Metal
Rating: 6.5/10

As I listened to the CD I noticed that there was a great bonus included on the album. There is a video with live Vehemence performance footage from the Las Vegas Metalfest [August 30, 2003] and some backstage home video clips. In Vehemence we have a good example of Melodic Death Metal from Arizona [US].

“The Lair Of The White Worm” by God Dethroned

Artist: God Dethroned
Title: “The Lair Of The White Worm”
Label: Metal Blade Records
Release Date: 1/25/2005
Genre: Death Metal
Rating: 8/10

This is the first time that I am getting to listen to God Dethroned and while I had heard a few tracks on some of the Internet/Cable stations I did not remember their exact sound at the time. So when I began this review I expected it to be an example of another really heavy Grind-Core like music. This was originally based on the group name and their cover artwork, a cover that really actually came across very well and did fit the name and premise of this band which does not happen all that much.

Apocalyptica @ Knitting Factory (3/15/2005)

Logo - Apocalyptica

Artist: Apocalyptica
Venue: Knitting Factory (New York, NY)
Opener: unknown
Label: Nuclear Blast Records
Date: 3/15/2005
Genre: Progressive Metal

It was cold March night and I remember this fact since my Friend and I decided to come to the venue an hour earlier and freeze our asses off while someone we knew tried to find an extra ticket for the show. Inside was interesting to behold for while there was clearly an amount of Metal Heads inside there was also a large group of older folks who looked more as if they were visiting from lunch at the New York Stock Exchange. It was my guess that they people had heard that Apocalyptica performs their music with cellos that they felt it would be some sort of Classical concert instead of a new form of Progressive Metal. I did not know for sure, and was not planning on asking.
