I recently caught the brand-new animated Spider-Man feature by Sony Pictures called “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse” which was a whole lot of fun for a wide age range of viewers. We’re big superhero fans here at the PiercingMetal Media Command HQ and regularly offer up critique on the comic book and film industry that releases such as this are geared towards and some items about the film can be enjoyed HERE. During the film, the original Spider-Man of the film lines out a number of his accomplishments with one of them being a Christmas Album. That brings us to “A Very Spidey-Christmas” and with today being Christmas Eve, I figured lets do a quick overview of this fun little EP. There are five tracks in all but the entire release is only 10 minutes in length so you can give it a quick listen in Spotify if you are so compelled when all is said and done. Now let’s discuss the tracks.
It begins with “Joy To The World” which is more of an R&B track and sung by Shameik Moore who is the voice behind Miles Morales, the new Spider-Man in the film. The song keeps the original melody of the classic holiday track but all of these songs are Spider-Man themed. For instance, in this tune Miles sings about making his own web fluid which is not free and needs to be paid for out of his own pocket. “Spidey-Bells (A Hero’s Lament)” is a play on both the classic “Jingle Bells” but calls to mind the childhood rhyme of “Jingle Bells, Batman Smells etcetera, etcetera. During the track Chris Pine who is this version of Spider-Man, laments his decision to be a singer. Funny. He also does “Up On The House Top” and once again from the Spidey perspective. “Deck The Halls” is a super tongue-in-cheek take and reminded me a little of how an inebriated Dean Martin might do the track and is done by the older Spider-Man from another dimension that is played by Jake Johnson. The whole thing closes with a very strange spoken word narrative of “The Night Before Christmas” which is apparently done by the Spider-Man from 1967 (in voice alone of course).
Most of this will be more amusing to you once you see the film which I highly recommend since it was excellent. The animated feature is fast paced and had a solid story (with one bonus scene post credits). As far as this EP goes, I’ll admit that it made me chuckle and I was glad to find Sony Music running with the joke from the film. Have a Merry Christmas Everyone if you are one of the readers who is celebrating the holiday.
