The fans of the prolific Steven Wilson were in for quite a treat today, as not only was the musician in town for a performance at the Best Buy Theater later on this evening but he was also going to make an appearance at the legendary J&R Music World downtown where he would perform some acoustic numbers and then sign his new CD for all in attendance. If you are a resident of NYC or even just a tourist, you should know that this establishment does this kind of thing several times a year and it is a wonderful experience for fans of music in general. The very idea that someone such as Wilson was going to be doing this was sending waves of excitement across his fan base. I laughed as I recalled how when I first learned of it and mentioned that something cool was happening in a text to a young lady I knew how my phone rang seconds later demoing the full disclosure. It is without question that his fans are very passionate about his work and appearances. That’s never a bad thing.

Wilson was already up at the Best Buy Theater and I will assume that they were getting prepared for the evening’s show and perhaps doing a preliminary sound check before heading downtown. The original time was supposed to be 12:30 but this would not get into gear until closer to 1pm based on the traffic coming downtown. In NYC one should always give themselves an extra half an hour when it comes to street travel as opposed to heading underground like the wise commuters. As he took to the stage when he was ready to go the musician seemed taken aback by the overwhelming amount of people who had assembled and were ready to enjoy his stuff. He spoke to the crowd politely as he hooked up his acoustic guitar and mentioned how there was a little bit of last minute stuff to get through for the tour considering the original guitarist would not be joining him on this run and they had to act quickly to replace him. For the acoustic session right now however he would have both Theo Travis and Adam Holzman on flute and keyboard respectively. I was glad that this was the case as it beefed up the sound just a little more and brought more atmosphere out of it. The first tune he did was “Postcard” and the official version can be found on his new “Grace For Drowning” CD. It’s a lovely tune and I look forward to hearing how it is supposed to sound now after hearing an alternate way. There was very little banter as he introduced the next song “Deform To Form A Star” which is also on the new release. The downside was that these were the only two songs being played and if there was originally supposed to be a third we can thank the Manhattan traffic for preventing us from hearing it.

A table was quickly set up for Steven to sit behind and the aisles of people were shuffled into a single but very long line so they could all meet Steven and get something signed. As there were many people there today for the event, the chance to speak to Wilson at any length was not possible but he did allow candid photos to be taken with him when it was requested. Most fans had the new CD to get signed but some even had the premium box set and special edition versions as well as the vinyl. Moving this along quickly allowed for everyone to get a chance to meet him before he had to zap back to the venue for the later evening show. I observed that there were fans from all parts of the states here today and some of these same fans were also following him on a number of dates on the tour. One has to admire that kind of dedication but it is deserved when you put out some quality stuff.

Kudos to the management team of J&R Music World for keeping this kind of event up for the fans, as it’s truly an awesome thing. This appeared to be one of the smoothest and well run of these functions that I had seen yet. Nice work, I cannot wait until the next one. Now it was off to the Best Buy Theater for me so I could get ready to be entertained by Mr. Wilson and his full band. I had never witnessed this in the past so I was very excited about how it would pan out. Stay tuned for that show report and any images we snare.
